DD Hairdressing: Flattering haircuts for a youthful look by Patrick Gildea

We get so many guests looking to enhance their youthful look, from colour placement to flattering cuts there are many ways to achieve this depending on your face shape and skin tone.

Patrick asked Anita to share some of her favourite cuts that will help to keep youth on your side!

Anita says “40 is being declared as the new 20, but we think 40 is even better! At 40 women are oozing with confidence, they know who they are and what they want”.
Old fashioned styles are long gone and being replaced with something classic and timeless; but Anita says “don’t let age be a barrier to try something new”.

Anita has listed some of her favourite cuts to give you some inspiration when choosing your own flattering style.

Layered Bob- Cate Blanchett

This classic style is the perfect choice for women who want to look chic and elegant without a lot of maintenance. The great thing is that there is a bob suited to most face shapes and hair textures. Chin length bobs are perfect for petite and angular faces while round faces should opt for lightly more length.

Shoulder Length Layers – Tina Fey

Shoulder length, bouncy layers are beautiful at any age but are particularly age appropriate- this simple style is very flattering with long face-framing layers. If you have very fine hair use a thicker fuller hair product such as Nioxin Diaboost before blow-drying which will help create the beautiful volume and bounce.

Long and Straight – Jennifer Aniston

Jennifer Aniston has been on best hair lists since she rocked the famous “Rachel Cut” in the 90’s and her long layered locks are no different. The good news is that this cut works on nearly everyone! It’s straight with layers all around the front, longer layers at the back and blunt ends. Keep the hair looking healthy by not thinning out the ends too much.

Layered Razor Cut – Halle Berry

Geometrically razor cut hair allowing a side fringe to creep over one eye. The style highlights delicate features and if you have razor sharp cheekbones this is the perfect cut for you to show them off. Anita says although this is a short cut you can still have fun styling it bringing an edgier feel to it with a Mohawk style or a sleek and elegant style whichever matches your mood!

Short With A Twist – Julie Bowen

This is a great length because it gives you so many options and is fun to play with since the focus is the length itself. You can add waves, wear it straight, sweep your fringe across your face, sleeked back or tousled there are plenty of choices and because of the shorter length, it won’t drag the face down
Anita says “whatever the length and style of cut you choose at any age–it should flatter, soften and frame your face, enhance your cut with a beautiful colour, one that will compliment your skin tone, depending on whether you are summer, winter, autumn or spring!

Eight years ago, Killary Gaelforce brought the Gaelforce North Adventure race to Donegal, and it has been growing in popularity ever year since.

There are a lot of adventure races around Ireland but this race holds something special – taking runners down the Bridle path in the tranquillity of the Glenveagh National Park to the majestic heights of Mount Errigal and finishing on the shores of Bunbeg.

Participants get to feel what Donegal is about – from its raw and rugged extremities to its gentle and genuine heart.

The race has a choice of two distances – 62km or 43km, of running, cycling and kayaking. There are also duathlon and relay options.

Gaelforce North takes place on the 22nd of September 2018, a gorgeous time of year as the landscape starts to take on its Autumnal palette.

The route has been changed for 2018. The new route is especially suited to road bike enthusiasts as more and more people crave the open road.

Pope Francis arrives in Ireland and says he is delighted to be back

POPE Francis has started his official visit to Ireland and said he is delighted to return to Ireland, having spent three months in Dublin almost 30 years ago to study English.

The pontiff also said he was looking forward to the World Meeting of Families.

He landed at Dublin Airport on board Alitalia flight AZ4000 from Rome, shortly after 10.25am.

Thousands of people from across Donegal have made the journey to Dublin to attend the Pope’s appearances at both Croke Park and the Phoenix Park.

Others who do not have tickets to these events are hoping to catch a glimpse of the pontiff when he is driven around Dublin in the ‘Pope Mobile’ later today.

Just minutes before touching down at Dublin Airport, Pope Francis said “For me it is the second meeting of families. I was in attendance at the Philadelphia meeting,” he said.

“I like to be with families.

“Secondly, and it touches my heart, I am returning to Ireland for the first time in almost 28 years,” he added.

“I stayed for almost three months in Ireland when I was studying English (in 1980).”

“For me, it was a very good memory.”

He said he has special memories of his time in Ireland and is delighted to return.

In keeping with tradition, Pope Francis walked through his aircraft to personally greet journalists he had never met before.

The Pope does not take questions at this point in his Irish visit, holding a special press conference on his flight back to Rome on Sunday night.

Pope Francis was formally greeted at Dublin Airport by the Tanaiste Simon Coveney before being escorted to Aras an Uachtarain for a formal meeting with President Michael D Higgins.

He will then attend a special State reception at Dublin Castle before visiting St Mary’s ProCathedral and the Capuchin Day Centre.

The address by Pope Francis at the World Meeting Of Families rally in Croke Park tonight will be the highlight of the week long festival.

Before the pontiff’s arrival, a massive security operation was underway in the west apron area of Dublin Airport.

Pope Francis later descended the steps onto Irish soil as a strong breeze blew, and was greeted by a long line of dignitaries and also Jessica Coveney (7), daughter of the Tanaiste and his wife Ruth, who presented him with flowers.

“I’ve very happy to be here,” the pontiff said as he received the bouquet.

Donegal man stages the best proposal at Kodaline gig!

A young Donegal man has taken to the stage at a Kodaline gig and asked the girl of his dreams to marry him.

Farmer Gareth Lamberton (25) won the heart of Coleraine girl Eleanor McCollum (24) after being matched in a ‘Take Me Out’ charity night.

And Gareth’s “High Hopes” got the right answer when he by proposed during Thursday’s concert at Custom House Square.

Beckoned onto the stage as the Dublin band sung their hit song The One, Eleanor, who works in marketing, said ‘yes’ in front of the crowd of 5,000.

And she was left so stunned by the proposal that she can’t remember anything more of the concert – despite spending the rest of the night in the VIP zone back stage.

Steve Garrigan from Kodaline

“You could say it was a bit of a shock,” Eleanor told the Belfast Telegraph. “But now I’ve had a little time to think about it, Gareth was behaving a bit strangely all day.

“When I met him off the train during the day he left me to go to the toilet and disappeared for an hour. It turns out he’d gone to Custom House Square to make sure everything was going to go as he planned.”

It’s been two years, three months and four days since the couple first met at the Balmoral Show in May 2016, and they clicked shortly afterwards when they were paired up with a restaurant voucher during a charity ‘Take Me Out’ night in Strabane.

“He’s never been the sort of person to do stunts like this,” said Eleanor. “He works on the family dairy farm with his brothers so it was very unexpected.

“It took a lot of convincing for me to get to the concert, but my best friend Rachel Nelson from Ballyclare was in on this from the start and persuaded me I had to go with her. She was the only other person he’d told.

“Gareth was frantically texting at the start of the concert. I wondered who he was sending messages to but Rachel told me not to be so nosy.

“Then they told me I’d won a competition to go back stage so I was lined up there with Gareth at the side of the stage as the band started to play ‘The One’.

“It turns out he’d gone to buy the engagement ring that morning and had everything planned. After all that I was always going to say yes. All credit to Gareth, he couldn’t have planned it any better. We’ve asked them [Kodaline] to be our wedding band, but I’m not sure if we’ll be able to afford them!”

The couple didn’t have much time to celebrate as Gareth jetted off to Canada yesterday.

“He’s off on a road trip with his brothers,” said Eleanor. “Maybe he thought I’d have something to say about Thursday night!

“We’ll get down to wedding planning when he gets back, but I hope to have a bit of a say in that. I’ve no idea what he might come up with!”

We must never allow abuse to happen in Ireland again – Pope Francis

$

0

The Pope has said that measures must be taken in response to the “betrayal of trust” and “repugnant” abuse inflicted on abuse victims in Ireland.

Speaking at Dublin Castle, Pope Francis said the Catholic Church must work to “remedy past mistakes and to adopt stringent norms meant to ensure that they do not happen again”.

Speaking in front of Taoiseach Leo Varadkar, he also risked made a brief reference to the abortion referendum.

He questioned whether a “materialistic ‘throwaway culture’” has made people “increasingly indifferent to the poor and to the most defenceless members of our human family, including the unborn, deprived of the very right to life”.

However, the Taoiseach told the audience that Ireland has “voted in our parliament and by referendum to modernise our laws – understanding that marriages do not always work, that women should make their own decisions, and that families come in many forms including those headed by a grandparent, lone parent or same-sex parents or parents who are divorced”.

He added: “Holy Father, I believe that the time has now come for us to build a new relationship between church and state in Ireland – a new covenant for the 21st Century.

“It is my hope that your visit marks the opening of a new chapter in the relationship between Ireland and the Catholic Church.”

Pope Francis went on to praise those who worked to bring about the Good Friday Agreement and 20 years of peace in Northern Ireland.

However, most attention was a section of his contribution – made in Italian – where he acknowledged how the Church had failed the “most vulnerable”.

“I cannot fail to acknowledge the grave scandal caused in Ireland by the abuse of young people by members of the Church charged with responsibility for their protection and education,” he said.

“The failure of ecclesiastical authorities – bishops, religious superiors, priests and others – to adequately address these repugnant crimes has rightly given rise to outrage, and remains a source of pain and shame for the Catholic community. I myself share those sentiments.”

The Pope praised his predecessor, Benedict XVI, who he said “spared no words in recognising both the gravity of the situation” and made “frank and decisive intervention”.

Pope Francis said the Church in Ireland “past and present” has played a role in promoting the welfare of children.

“It is my hope that the gravity of the abuse scandals, which have cast light on the failings of many, will serve to emphasise the importance of the protection of minors and vulnerable adults on the part of society as a whole.

“In this regard, all of us are aware of how urgent it is to provide our young people with wise guidance and sound values on their journey to maturity,” he said.

Mr Varadkar said the Church was meant to be a place of charity, forgiveness and compassion – but “far too often there was judgement, severity and cruelty, in particular, towards women and children and those on the margins”.

Agony for Donegal ladies as final place slips from their grasp

$

It is a day that will agonise over the long winter evenings as Cork ended the Donegal Ladies’ bid for a place in a first-ever All-Ireland senior final.

Donegal 0-11 Cork 2-11

By Chris McNulty at Dr Hyde Park

Goals in either half by Orla Finn and Saoirse Noonan broke the Donegal hearts as a place in the final slipped from their grasp.

Finn’s major, in the 20th minute kept Cork at arm’s length and Noonan hammered in the last nail late in the game as Cork, finally, wriggled free of Donegal.

It was a brave display by Donegal, who will rue a number of missed chances on a day when they had nine wides and were maybe a little too conservative for too long.

It was a game that was there for the winning, but that moment in the first half when Finn palmed home was a game changer.

Donegal’s rearguard, including the goalkeeper, Laura Gallagher, committed itself en masse to close down the advancing Cork captain Ciara O’Sullivan.

Seizing the moment perfectly, O’Sullivan’s lofted pass to the far post was turned in by the lurking Finn, who steered to the net.

When Doireann O’Sullivan and Finn, twice, knocked over points, there was a danger that the game was creeping away from Donegal, but Karen Guthrie steadied the wobbles with her fourth point of the day. Briefly, a goal seemed on, but Guthrie’s stinging effort whizzed just over the crossbar.

Donegal made two changes to the team that had been named yesterday with Olive McCafferty and Kate Keaney coming in to replace Aoife McDonnell and Eilish Ward, but McDonnell was sent on for McCafferty in the 25th minute, not long after Finn netted.

McDonnell had played, alongside Yvonne Bonner on the 2003 All-Ireland Junior-winning Donegal team, also under Maxi Curran’s stewardship.

Eight of the Donegal starting team here featured in the 2010 All-Ireland Intermediate final win over Waterford, but this was new ground entirely for a Donegal team as they tried their hand at denying ladies queens Cork – who have won 11 of the previous 13 All-Ireland titles.

Donegal built a wall across their ’45, leaving Bonner and Geraldine McLaughlin to plough the furrows in attack and it certainly served to frustrate the Cork advances in the early stages.

Cork punched through for Eimear Scally and Finn to hit scores in the first six minutes, but Donegal were level with two quick-fire points.

Katy Herron and Deirdre Foley worked a sharp counter that ended with McLaughlin patiently waiting for the right moment before deliciously firing over.

And the leveller came when, after Ciara Hegarty forced a turnover at one end, captain Guthrie converted at the other.

Guthrie had been an injury doubt  just a couple of weeks ago with a leg muscle injury, but the Glenfin midfielder showed no ill effects here, slamming over another equalising score after Scally momentarily had restored the Cork advantage.

Finn’s goal helped Cork to a four-point (1-6 to 0-5) half-time lead.

Donegal remained in touch with Katy Herron and McLaughlin (2) responding to scores by Doireann O’Sullivan and substitute Saoirse Noonan.

With Róisín Phelan doing a superb marking job on McLaughlin, ably assisted by Melissa Duggan, who swept in front of the Termon sharp-shooter for the duration, Donegal’s options were limited.

And yet, when McLaughlin tapped over a free in the 53rd minute, only Finn’s goal separated the participants.

It was a similar story, three minutes later, as McLaughlin cancelled out a wonder point by Doireann O’Sullivan to retain the hope.

Donegal sub Amy Boyle Carr was sent to the sin bin and another Noonan free had Cork four up again.

Sarah Jane McDonald had a sight of the bullseye when cleverly fed inside by Guthrie, but her shot was brilliantly charged down and Donegal were running out of room and time.

Noonan put it beyond reach and Donegal were left to wonder what might have been.

An award-winning Donegal Town restaurant is celebrating another remarkable success this week at A Taste of Donegal Food Festivial.

The chefs of Chandpur Indian Restaurant have picked up their 8th Gold Medal in a row in the ‘A Passion to Inspire’ competition. This year, Chef Shah Sultan took the prize.

This contest sees judges visiting local restaurants to see chefs demonstrate their culinary skills in their own kitchens.

At Chandpur, Chef Rana Miah entered the Chefs competition in 2010 for the first time and got a silver medal. In 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015 Rana got a Gold Medal and also he got Overall Runner Up in 2014 and Overall Champion in 2015.

Rana handed the task over to his cousin Chef Shah Sultan, who has won a Gold Medal in 2016, 2017, 2018.

Chef Sultan’s achievement this year is another boost for Chandpur, which has earned a place in the TripAdvisor Hall of Fame for having 5 Stars 5 years in a row.

Susan Miah of Chandpur said: “The standard is so high, to get a Gold Medal you have to score between 90 and 100 with the Judges, so to achieve this for 8 years in a row proves how wonderfully consistent our two Chefs are.”

“The judges visit our restaurant on Thursday, the night before the Festival opens every year. We are always very busy and our Chef has to prepare a special menu for them and also prepare food for the whole restaurant too, so to be able to win Gold every year under this pressure, proves how successful they are,” said Susan.

It was a golden chance for what Maxi Curran says is Donegal’s ‘golden generation’ – but Donegal’s bid to reach a first TG4 All-Ireland SFC final was derailed by Cork in Roscommon this evening.

Orla Finn and Saoirse Noonan hit the killer goals as Cork won 2-11 to 0-11.

Ulster champions Donegal had big ambitions of reaching the final, but were left dejected as Cork showed a little more composure and craft on the day.

“We knew it would be a big challenge against a top outfit, but we take some solace in that we gave it everything,” Curran said.

“We came there with genuine hopes of getting over the line, but it wasn’t to be.

“All year long they gave it everything, but they came up against a superior outfit with more guile, more experience and a little bit more know how.”

Finn’s 20th minute goal kept Cork in front throughout and Noonan’s late goal ended any fading hopes of a Donegal comeback.

Curran added: “We felt that we had the players to do a job, but it didn’t go that way. We squandered too many shots and took too many wrong shot selections.”

Donegal’s Masters were denied by Dublin in the All-Ireland Masters semi-final replay in Cavan.

Donegal 1-9 Dublin 0-13

Gerard McGrenra netted a late goal, but it wasn’t enough for Val Murray’s Donegal as they bowed out following a one-point defeat.

Donegal had led 0-5 to 0-4 at half-time.

Three Michael Ward points and scores from Paul McGonigle and McGrenra had Donegal in front at the changeover.

Ray Cosgrove, who had helped sink Donegal in a 2002 All-Ireland quarter-final, hit three second half points for the Dubs, who began to inch away in the second half.

Niall Crossan kicked seven frees for Dublin in all and, while Donegal did get a late goal when McGrenra batted home, it wasn’t to be.

Donegal:Martin Gillespie; Charlie Doherty, Packie McGrath, Donal Martin; Michael McShane, Adrian McColgan PJ Gallagher; John Haran, Paul McGonigle (0-2, 1f); Kerry Ryan, John McFadden, Charlie Bonner; Gerard McGrenra (1-1), Brian McLaughlin (0-1), Michael Ward (0-4, 3f). Kilcar woman tackles ‘fake news’ in new role at Euronews NBC

Donegal woman Angela Barnes has begun a major new presenting role this week broadcasting to 160 countries in a ground-breaking project on Euronews NBC.

The journalist has joined the international news programme Good Morning Europe to host a dedicated social media segment called The Cube.

In a media world full of ‘fake news’ Angela will guide viewers through the verification process journalists use with online sources.

This appointment is a remarkable step for Angela, who has spent the past 10 years at Sky in London. Her career began in production, before she progressed to become a reporter and presenter. Viewers will recognise Angela most recently from the Sky News technology segment Swipe and Sky Sports.

Angela’s new role at Euronews NBC places her at the frontline of breaking news.

Angela told Donegal Woman: “The Cube is an industry-first. The segment I’ll present is about breaking down the floods of information that is on social media and presenting live breaking news.

“We’ve found in a time when fake news is spreading that our audience are all too aware of it. We want to draw the curtain back and give a behind the scenes look at how we verify information.”

Angela added: “It’s an exciting promotion to move from broadcasting in the UK to the rest of Europe. Euronews NBC is broadcast in 160 countries, and NBC in America will be dipping into us for breaking news from Europe.

“I had my send-off from Sky on Monday and they gave me a nice big bunch of flowers and gifts and I got a nice speech from my former boss. It was an emotional day. I’ve loved working at Sky, I’ve been there since finishing University.”

The position also involves Angela relocating to Lyon, where Euronews NBC headquarters are located. France may be far from Kilcar, but Angela sees it as a ‘home from home’.

Angela was born in Winchester in the UK and spent all her summers and holidays in Donegal, where her father has family roots.

Angela’s parents Sue and Stephen retired to Kilcar 15 years ago, and she loves the area so much that she is hoping to buy her own house there soon.

She said: “I love to get back to Donegal. I love surfing at Tramore and Muckross and hiking at Slieve League.”

Angela Barnes

The adventures don’t stop in Donegal though. Angela recalls a project in Iceland as one of the many highlights of her career at Sky, while covering tragic events such as terrorist attacks have shown her how important quick and accurate information needs to be.

Now is an exciting time for Angela be part of an innovative and transparent news show such as The Cube. The role of a journalist has changed a lot in the past ten years to involve sources from social media, and Angela’s new role reflects this advancement. She also hinted that more big news is in the pipeline.

For viewers wanting to tune in from Donegal, Good Morning Europe can be watched on Euronews NBC from Ireland on Sky under the news channels section and also live online.

Angela has always wanted to be a news presenter. She remembers her school days when teachers asked her what she wanted to do and she did not hesitate to reveal her dream job.

Her advice for anyone wanting to follow a similar path is simple:

“It’s like anything, if you work hard you can make anything happen along the way.

“I’m really grateful to be setting out to do what I wanted from a young age,” Angela said.

Georgie Kelly aims to repay Kenny’s faith during Dundalk’s trophy trail

Georgie Kelly bagged his first Dundalk goal last night and the Inishowen man says he wants to make a big impact at Oriel Park.

Kelly was a summer recruit from First Division leaders UCD and he netted the second goal last night in Dundalk’s 2-0 win over Finn Harps to send the Lilywhites into the FAI Cup quarter-finals.

It was his fifth goal of the season against Harps having tormented Ollie Horgan’s side while in UCD’s colours.

“There’s a lot of relief – the first one is always the hardest to get,” Kelly said.

“I’m delighted to get the goal and get the win.

“The whole move, in general. Ronan took one touch and put a fantastic ball in and lucky I finished it.

“It wasn’t an easy game, Harps are a tough, physical side.”

Dundalk manager Stephen Kenny is a long-time admirer of Kelly and finally landed his man this year.

Now, Kelly wants to repay his manager’s faith in Dundalk’s bid for League and FAI Cup honours.

He said: “It’s great to be up and running. We have five or six games in 15 days. They’re coming thick and fast and it’s important to keep picking up wins.

“I want to keep making an impact in games and try to score important goals. Hopefully I can do that and support Pat (Hoban) with goals.”

Bonner returns as Na Rossa score first win of 2018 on a nostalgic night in Dooey

39 years after he first played Championship football for the club, Declan Bonner was in the thick of it tonight as Na Rossa bagged their first win of the season.

Na Rossa 0-12 Urris 1-7

Heavily beaten seven days ago by Letterkenny Gaels, Na Rossa played as if affronted by suggestions that they would limp out of the Junior A Championship.

It was something of a historic and nostalgic night as this was likely the last Championship game to be played in Dooey as Na Rossa hope to be moved in to their new development for the 2019 campaign.

Donegal senior manager Bonner, who celebrated his 53rd birthday just a couple of weeks ago, was in goal tonight as they won for the first time in 2018.

In 1979, the then flame-haired 14-year-old broke onto the Na Rossa senior team and is still lining out for his home club, of which he is also the Chairman these days.

Na Rossa led 0-10 to 0-7 with the returning John Paul McCready hitting a couple of points.

They were rocked, however, when Mark McLaughlin got in for an Urris goal in the closing stages to level the scoring.

However, Christian Bonner’s fourth point of the evening and another score from Oran Molloy, also back in the side having missed last weekend’s game, steered Na Rossa to a timely win.

Eugene Molloy, Owen Gallagher and Aidan McHugh were also among the Na Rossa point scorers.

The people of Donegal are on a real winning streak this summer after another National Lottery prize was collected this week.

A ticket sold in the SuperValu store at St. Catherine’s Filling Station in Killybegs has won a cool €69,018 prize which was claimed on Friday.

The lucky Lotto player from ‘the north of the country’ entered the draw on 28th July 2018, but only realised his fortune this week when he used his National Lottery App to scan some old tickets.

The National Lottery winners’ room was a hive of activity on Friday afternoon as six separate winners collected a combined €914,023 in prizes.

The biggest winner of the day was an online player from Co. Offaly who collected his massive €500,000 Lotto Plus 1 prize which he won on Wednesday 15th August.

Most recently in Donegal, a Letterkenny family celebrated winning a EuroMillions Plus prize of €500,000 from a ticket bought at the Oldtown Stores.

Also this month, a Donegal man won half a million euro after buying his lucky ticket at McGettigan’s Applegreen Service Station, in Lifford, Co. Donegal.
