DONEGAL boxer Jason Quigley has won again – this time winning a gold medal at this week’s Czech Grand prix.
The European U-23 champion and National Eilte champ, who boxes out of the Finn Valley Club, claimed middleweight gold at the 44th edition of the Usti nad Labem Grand Prix on Saturday.
Sean McComb had to settle for silver after losing out to Beijing 2008 Olympian Miklos Varga of Hungary. Varga reached the last 32 of the Olympics when he went out to Evaldas Petrauskas (Lithuania) 20-12.
Current Irish Elite champion Quigley, was 9-4 ahead going into the third round before posting a 14-6 decision over Serbia’s Alexsandr Drenovak, who reached the last-16 at the London 2012 Olympics.
McComb. of the Holy Trinity BC in Belfast, was 3-2 ahead after the first versus Varga, but the Hungarian was 7-5 in front at the end of the second en route to a 15-10 verdict.
“Jason boxed incredibly well and he had a fantastic win, said Irish team manager Paul McMahon,
“Sean had a good first round, but his opponent came back into it in the second. I thought that Sean had a good third round also. He was unlucky in the end.”
