THE Donegal Mountain Rescue Team (DMRT) will be properly equipped to undertake rescue missions over the coming years – thanks to support from Shell E&P Ireland Limited.
For the second time Shell has sponsored the high durability Keela coats that allow the 35-strong rescue team carry out their life-saving functions in the most extreme weather conditions.
Donegal Mountain Rescue Team spokesperson, Brian Murray, has recognised the support from Shell which runs its massive offshore operations out of Killybegs port.
“It costs over €50,000 per year to run the rescue service. We get support from the Coast Guard and from Donegal County Council but we also have to fundraise for as much as 80% of our running costs.
“Sponsorship from companies such as Shell is most welcome. The members of the mountain rescue team dedicate a lot of their time to training and rescue missions as well as to fundraising. Major sponsorship such as kitting out the members in proper mountain gear eases the burden of fundraising on the members and is much appreciated.”
Brian pointed out that the team undertakes humanitarian missions as well as rescue operations.
“During the harsh winters of the past few years we carried out up to 50 operations including getting support and aid to people who were stranded because of the snow.
“On average, we would be called out 30 to 35 times a year. It demands a big commitment from the members, who are all volunteers. But there is immense satisfaction for them in knowing that they have played a part in saving a life or assisting in a successful rescue,” said Brian.
Ed Moran, Shell’s operations manager in Killybegs, said the company was pleased to be able to assist in the work of DMRT.
“They carry out a vital life-saving function. As a company, Shell’s first priority is safety, so it is natural that we would provide some support to such a worthy organisation,” he said.
