Jim McGuinness has stressed the importance of next Sunday’s All Ireland final rematch against Mayo in Castlebar following Donegal’s defeat to Cork on Saturday evening.
A win for Donegal at the weekend would leave them on 6 points and effectively ensure safety, however a defeat would see them embroiled in a relegation dogfight going into their final league match against Dublin. McGuinness said
“Next week is a big game for us now but that’s the great thing about football were disappointed after losing the game on Saturday but were back training on Tuesday night and getting ready for Mayo”
“We know where we’re at and were still not at the level we need to be, Cork had big spells in the second half were they had a lot of possession, but for us it’s about getting up the levels.
“We looked at Michael Murphy in the middle of the park and tried one or two other things during the game. We tried to win the two points and were trying to balance both. Hopefully we can go to Mayo and get the two points we need.”
“I think were probably around the same level as we were at this time last year. We’re maybe a wee bit ahead in terms of our overall conditioning.”
“We’re reasonably happy but were disappointed with our 2nd half display tonight if we had upped our levels by 10-15% we would have got something from the game.”
