Donegal manager Jim McGuinness was more concerned with the injury sustained to Neil McGee than the result in yesterday’s Allianz national league clash against Mayo in Castlebar.
Donegal’s towering full back was stretchered off during the game with a suspected dislocated knee cap. McGuinness did reveal after when speaking to the Irish Independent that McGee’s knee was pushed back into place when he was in the shower.
“As long as he is alright we can live with the result, we don’t know yet the extent of the injury and what damage has occurred but were hopeful it’s not too serious”
McGuinness said his side made uncharacteristic errors during the match which led to defeat
“In trying to create scoring opportunities we kept kicking the ball away which isn’t like us”
“You’d like to think that’s linked to your fitness levels and your fitness is linked to your concentration and concentration is linked to good decisions making on the ball”
“So hopefully in nine weeks time mistakes that are being made now will have been eradicated”
“I was happy with our performance in the 2nd half I think it was the first time during the league campaign when we found a good intensity level”
We know what we’re at in terms of fitness levels and I know we’ve been trotting that out for the last few weeks but that’s the reality.”
“It would have been nice to finish the job and to have bought us an extra couple of weeks”
Donegal’s Division 1 status now rests on their final league match against Dublin in Ballybofey in two weeks time.
