A Garda has claimed he was forced to move out of Drumkeen after he received death threats from a local man.

Letterkenny Court.

Letterkenny Court.

Garda Conor Cunningham claimed he received the threats from Charlie McGee of Lettermore, Drumkeen following a late night incident.

McGee, 43, appeared before Letterkenny District Court charged with making threats to kill or cause harm.

The court heard how Garda Cunningham and another Garda approached McGee at 3am on the morning of August 31st last to inform him that his brother had been arrested.

But McGee answered what business that was of Garda Cunningham.

He then launched into a tirade of abuse and threats against Garda Cunningham.

He told him "That's none of your f***** business and if you follow me to my property, I will burn you and your family out of that house and I will kill you."

Garda Cunningham said he was living in the area at the time and that his wife was pregnant.

He said he was very concerned by the threats and took them seriously.

He added that he had lived in the area for a year and had been looking for a house in the area to live in but had decided against it after the threats.

Solicitor for McGee, Michael Shiel, asked Garda Cunningham if he had a torch with him on the night in question and how he knew it was McGee who made the threats.

"Thankfully I am blessed with good eyesight and I was only a few feet from him. I also know him from before and I have had conversations with him," said Garda Cunningham.

Mr McGee gave evidence and denied that he made any threats against Garda Cunningham.

However, Judge Paul Kelly said he was satisfied the threats had been made and found McGee guilty.

He adjourned the case and asked for probation and community service reports but told solicitor Shiel that he was not making any promises to his client.
