DUNFANAGHY GOLF NEWS: NEIL MCGINLEY WINS EASTER HAMPER

Well I am sure you all watched the news and saw snow everywhere with 10 foot drifts and people cut off but believe it or not we still played golf in Dunfanaghy.

There was a bitter cold wind that stopped most people going out on Friday and Saturday but the course was open.

In fact a Society went out on Saturday and had the course to themselves. But there was no rain or snow only the bitter cold wind.

However things eased somewhat on Sunday and the course filled again. However the wind was still a big factor and this affected the scoring big time.

I played with Neil McGinley and I have never seen him putting so well. He was only 2 over gross for the back nine and it was this that won him the Easter Eggs.

Anyway back to Wednesday Competition. Gerard Duffy has had a few close calls in competition recently but this time he made no mistake coming home with a super 44 points a clear 5 shots ahead of the field.

Noel Maguire took second with 39 points and Donal Boyle got another top up on his card with the Gross prize.

Master Chef Eamonn Hunter occasionally graces the course and he did it in style on Wednesday with 38 points playing with his old clubs. We expect big things Eamonn when the new ones arrive.

Friday the wind was so bad and it was so cold that no-one ventured out on the course at all.

Saturday I’m afraid was more of the same and only a Society braved the bitter cold winds to go on the course. Mind you when the rest of the country is bathed in snow we don’t even need orange balls.

Sunday the course filled with golfers needing their weekly fix of golf and although it was still cold the wind had an effect on putts blowing them off course.

However even with this Neil McGinley played some of the steadiest golf I have seen for some time. His putting was a dream with the ball falling in from everywhere.

With the conditions as they were, making the Competition stroke seemed harsh. A steady 68 was enough for Neil to win on the day but only just as second and third had also 68. BOT decided yet again the order of the day.

Paul Smith fresh from John Chamber’s party took second place edging out Patrick Duffy on BOT. Cahal McMonagle won the Gross with 78 and the nines were won by Paedar Curran and Mark McHugh.
