Thomas Pringle TD has described the application which has been submitted to the Guinness Book of Records to recognise Ireland as having ‘achieved’ the World’s Most Expensive Bank Bailout as “a sad day for Ireland, but an accurate reflection of the unjust burden that has been put on the people”.

An application has been lodged with the offices of the Guinness Book of Records to recognise Ireland’s bank bailout as the World’s Most Expensive Bank Bailout per capita.

The bid is being submitted by the campaign group Debt Justice Action on behalf of all of the people of Ireland who, the group claims, will each pay €16,500 to make this record attempt a reality, with it being estimated that at least €67 billion has been poured into Irish banks to date.

Speaking today on the matter, the Independent TD for Donegal South-West stated: “It is indeed a sad state of affairs when an application is being submitted on behalf of our country for such a matter, yet it may very well be an accurate one and something we have the last government to thank for, as well as the current one for following through with it.

“In its supporting documents, Debt Justice Ireland has included the most recent IMF working paper, which recognises Ireland as having the, ‘costliest banking crisis in advanced economies since at least the Great Depression’.

“Coming from the crowd who have imposed such austerity on us is interesting and may well be the glowing reference that gets us this ‘sought after’ prize.

“The campaign group expects to hear back from the Guinness Book of Records within 4 – 6 weeks and we’ll know then if we’ve achieved this unique status,” stated Pringle.
