Arsonists have torched a Garda’s private car parked outside the station where he works.
The silver Toyota Corolla car belonging to Garda Damian O’Connor was completely gutted in the attack at Kilmacrennan Garda station around 5.45am this morning.
Garda O’Connor was out on patrol at the time of the attack.
The car was taken away and is being forensically examined and no arrests have been made.
Sources claim the attack may have been carried out by criminals being investigated for incidents in the local village.
It came less than 24 hours after arsonists struck at a farm in the townland of Ballyheerin, just outside Kilmacrennan.
Farm buildings, horse carts and a van were set alight but no-one was injured.
Gardai appealed for information on the attacks.
“This was a despicable act of wanton vandalism,” said a Garda spokesman.
“We would appeal to anyone with information to give it to Gardai as a matter of urgency.”
A spokesman for the Garda Press office said a full investigation has been launched into the incident but no arrests have been made.
Local independent councillor Michael McBride condemned those responsible for the incident.
“The people of Kilmacrennan are outraged that they have woken up on Easter Sunday to this dreadful incident,” he said.
“This sort of incident is extremely rare thankfully but it shows the level some criminals will go to in an attempt to disrupt the work of gardai. It will not succeed.
“The village and surrounding community is rightly angry after what has happened.”
