ATHLETICS: EMILY CROKE ‘PUTTS’ HERSELF IN THE PICTURE FOR ROSSES AC

There was a very successful weekend for the North West athletes at the National Community Games Athletics Finals in Athlone recently.

The Gaoth Dobhair U-13 Mixed Relay team won the silver medals by finishing 2nd in the final having won their heat and semi final. D’éirigh le foireann lúthchleasa Ghaoth Dobhair boinn airgid a bhaint i gCraobh na hÉireann de na Cluichí Pobail ( Community Games) a bhí ar siúl in Átha Luain nuair a chríochnaigh siad sa dara áit sa Rása Sealaíochta Meascaithe Faoi 13. Ar an bhfoireann bhí Johnson Bangora, Mín Doire Dhamh; Cian Mac an tSaoi, Doire Beaga; Emma Nic an Bhreithiún, An Luinnigh agus Leah Nic Gairbheith, Cnoc an Stolaire.

The Rosses Boys U-14 team ran well in their heat and qualified for the semi final. On the team were John Boyle, Oran Wallace, Joe Sharkey, Patrick Marry. Also representing Donegal was the Rosses U-14 Girls team of Mia Mc Devitt, Braade; Andrea Greene, Dungloe; Mia Baikie, Burtonport and Aoibhinn Mc Elroy, Keadue. There was a wonderful bronze medal for Roshine N.S. schoolgirl Emilly Croke in the U-14 Shot Putt where she threw over 11 metres. Tara Geoghegan, Cruit competed in the U-10 100m where she finished 5th in the semi final. Jordan Gallagher, Burtonport competed in the U-12 Ball Throw and Luke Mc Dermott, Mullaghderg competed in the U-16 Discus. And to cap off a very successful weekend there was Silver for David Geoghegan, Cruit in the Plate Final of the U-8 80m. Well done to Rosses coordinator and county athletics manager Michael Mc Elroy, Keadue.

Cross Country training will be starting in Maghery on Monday 7th September at 6pm for pupils from Roshine NS, St Crone’s NS, Doochary NS, Leitir NS and Meenagowan NS. Fee €2.
A Child Protection Course hosted by Athletics Ireland will take place in the clubhouse at Lifford AC on Monday 7th September from 6.30pm to 9.30pm. Cost of the course is €5 payable to AAI. An Assistant Club Coaching Course will take place at a Donegal venue on Friday evening 25th and Saturday morning 26th September. More details later. A Level One Coaching Course will take place also at a Donegal venue- 9/10 October & 30/31 October. Anybody interested please contact Ita Gallagher or Sean McGinley.

Some Upcoming fixtures: 13th September, Letterkenny, Donegal Athletics Board Grand Prix 5K Fun Run. On Friday 25th September there was be Schools Cross Country in Carrickfinn at 11am. Under 9 (born 2007/2008) – 600m, Under 11 (born 2005/2006) – 800m and Under 13 (born 2003/2004) – 1000m. A new category this year will be a race for Secondary Schools First Years. 4th October, Carndonagh, Donegal Juvenile Even Ages & Masters Cross Country. 11th October, FV venue TBC, Donegal Juvenile Uneven Ages & Novice Cross Country. 15th October, Lifford, Donegal Primary Schools Cross Country
