A move by the National Roads Authority to fund a major new roundabout near the site of the former Unifi plant to help ease serious traffic congestion in Letterkenny is a massive boost, said county councillor Ciaran Brogan.
He said that before and since the N.R.A. acquired the necessary land two years ago for the purpose, he had made strong representations on the matter
Now we have it confirmed that the proposed roundabout at the Business Park Road at Lisnennan has taken a step nearer.
The roads authority is allocating funding towards a detailed design plan and the preparation of the tender documents, all of which is being done in conjunction with Donegal County Council.
The work, the estimated cost for which is 2 million euro, will then to go tender with the planning process having been finalised some time ago.
Cllr Brogan said "There have been huge issues with traffic congestion in this area for some years now and this will help ease them considerably. I have had frequent meetings with the N.R.A. where I have raised the issue and am delighted that they have agreed to come up with the funding of the proposed new roundabout’s construction.
"This is very good news and the fact that the planning process has been successfully gone through means this will happen sooner rather than later.
"I know there have been a lot of concerns about the traffic build-up in that area at certain times just as I’m well aware of the traffic tailbacks on the Ramelton Road.
"I have also been vigorously pursuing the issue of the proposed Bonagee link route with the N.R.A. and will continue to over the coming months. But meanwhile, I feel the proposed new roundabout at the Unifi site will help enormously in the relief of traffic coming and going from that part of Donegal."
