THE emergency services in Co Donegal have been put on standby for today's heavy rain in the county.

Met Eireann has already issued an Orange Status alert for the county today, following a week of warm and dry weather.

Farmers across Donegal worked late into the evening yesterday to take advantage of the last few hours of dry weather.

But today's rain could last up to 18 hours with heavy and thundery showers at times.

Gardai and the fire service are on standby to deal with any emergencies.

Staff responsible for flood defences at Letterkenny General Hospital have also been placed on standby.

Gardai are also warning that the heavy rain will leave roads in a treacherous condition later after several days of dry weather, with any oil spills making some stretches of road dangerous.

Latest weather models suggest the worst of the downpours will be over west Donegal and Inishowen in the afternoon and evening.

These will continue overnight into Saturday but are expected to clear by mid-morning.

Sunday will start off dry, with rain expected in the afternoon.

Temperatures will also drop significantly over the next few days with highs on Monday around 12C in the North West.
