The gang are pretending to be Gardai checking on forged notes.
Gardai are hunting a gang disguised as Gardai and calling on the homes of elderly people pretending to be checking forged money.
The gang have already called to a number of homes in the Glenfin area of the county.
The two man gang, who were dressed in suits, pretended to be detectives, after calling tot he home of one elderly man.
The conmen asked the man if he had cash in the house and when he produced more than €700 in cash, they asked to go outside to examine the money in more detail in daylight.
However, as they were counting the money, a neighbour arrived and the men returned the money and left.
The men were traveling in a green Toyota Avensis with a partial registration of 01 KY.
Garda Crime Prevention officer, Sgt Paul Wallace, appealed to people to ask for identification when people called to their homes.
"This incident showed the benefit of neighbours calling on each other. Only for this neighbour called, I have no doubt this money or some of it would have been stolen.
"If anybody sees this car or these men operating out of it, they should contact their local Garda station immediately," he said.
The investigation is part of the Garda's Operation Thor which aims to crackdown on rural crime.
