Ryan McHugh will feature in the Dr McKenna Cup - but who will it be for?

Donegal GAA star Ryan McHugh has admitted he doesn't know who he will feature for in this year's Dr McKenna Cup.

The pre-season competition used primarily to blood new players called into the Donegal squad starts early next month.

However, McHugh, a student at UUJ is eligible to represent both his University and Donegal.

Prior to his enrolment at UUJ - McHugh was a student in Sligo IT, and played for them in the Connacht equivalent of the Dr McKenna Cup which was the FBD League.

McHugh says one way or another he will be playing in the Dr McKenna Cup - but who for will be decided when both sets of management teams discuss the issue.

McHugh told The Irish News, "It’s probably not for me to decide. Managers will have to sit down and talk so I’m not sure what team I’ll be playing for, but I’ll be playing McKenna Cup one way or the other.

"Maybe if one team gets through to the semi-final I’ll get playing for both.

“I enjoyed every minute of the FBD League, you play different teams in a different competition and it was a good standard of football. It’ll be my debut in a different competition so I’m looking forward to it.

“Pitches are heavy, players maybe aren’t as fit as for championship but like every other player in Ireland, I’d rather be out playing games than training. You can’t beat games to improve fitness and sharpness.”
