USL League Cup game at Traigh a Loch Tues 16th April 2013
Fanad Utd 3 – Bonagee Utd 5
Played in a blustery breeze in Traigh a Lough both teams served up plenty of goals in this league cup match.
Fanad started the better and played some nice flowing football and took the lead after 15 minutes.
After a foul on a Fanad player the veteran Paddy Mc Grenaghan played in a wonderful freekick to the back post where the on-rushing Conor Matthewson finished with a fine header.
The game ebbed and flowed after this but against the run of play Fanad found themselves 2-1 down in quick succession.
Firstly a long ball over the top was finished by George Larkin to make it 1-1 and then after a mix up in the Fanad defence Anthony Appiah finished expertly after rounding the keeper.
Great credit to the young Fanad team who battled it out for the rest of the first half and they were rewarded following yet another delightful Mc Grenaghan corner by the head of Daire McDaid to leave the game level at half time.
The second half started with Fanad having much of the possession but could not turn possession into goals and was soon trailing after a great finish from close range from Aiden McLaughlin.
Bonagee then pressed home their advantage and made it 4-2 after Jason Ashmore finished after a mix up in the youthful Fanad defence.
Bonagee really finished the home team off after their big centre forward’s shot was saved by the keeper only for the on rushing Geoff Kelly to finish from close range. Fanad pulled a late consolation goal back on the 87 minute when Shane Buchanan ran onto a ball over the top and finished clinically, but it was too little too late for the home side.
Best for Bonagee on the night was Anthony Appiah and Aiden McLaughlin with Daire McDaid, Shane Buchanan and the ever young Paddy Mc Grenaghan best for Fanad.
Referee: T. Mc Aree.
