The death has taken place of well-known Letterkenny Town Councillor Tadhg Culbert.
Mr Culbert, an employee at An Post, passed away earlier today at the Donegal Hospice.
He had been ill for some time.
Mr Culbert, who was originally from Limerick Junction in Tipperary, came to Donegal in 1973 to work with An Post and made his home here.
A member of the Fianna Fail party, he was extremely well-liked and respected both on a personal and professional level.
He was first elected to the council in 1985, but lost his seat in 1999 and was re-elected in 2009.
He was chairman of Letterkenny Town Council twice and in June 2010 took up the post for the third time when the title of Mayor was deferred upon him.
Tributes are pouring in from across the county for the late Mr Culbert from fellow councillors including Mayor of Letterkenny Dessie Larkin and councillors Ciaran Brogan, and Victor Fisher as well as former councillor PJ Blake and Senator Jimmy Harte.
He was a fine hurler and also has close links with Letterkenny Rovers.
He is survived by his wife Hilda and two children Andrew and Lisa and extended family.
His removal will take place from the hospice this evening (WED) at 6pm to No 8 The Croft, Glencar.
Senator Brian O Domhnaill said: Tadhg was a personable, affable and likable gentleman. While we all knew of his illness, I am greatly saddened today to learn of his passing. I will always remember him fondly.
“I would like to extend my deepest sympathy to his wife Hilda and his children Andrew and Lisa.”
