Judge Conal Gibbons told defendant John Paul Boyle that he needed to apologise to a Garda whom he had abused while being drunk and disorderly.

Letterkenny District Court was told today that Boyle had become abusive in a taxi while on a night out.

When Gardai had asked him if he had any illegal substances Boyle, 27, replied he had a “load of heroin.”

He then abused Gardai calling them a litany of names before being arrested.

Boyle, of Ard Crone, Dungloe, was charged with being abusive to Gardai and being drunk and disorderly.

Judge Gibbons asked Boyle what he was going to do about his drinking and his behaviour?

Boyle said he was an idiot when he was drunk and was trying to do something about it.

“I want you to look up a word on Google and the word is ‘apologise’. I will not tolerate anyone challenging Gardai.

“I expect every citizen of the State to co-operate with Gardai – our duty is to co-operate. That’s all we’re asking. We’re not asking people to go down on bended knee,” he said.

Judge Gibbons said Gardai had been killed on duty and they didn’t deserve anyone to speak to them in the disgraceful manner in which Boyle had.

Boyle’s girlfriend addressed the court and said she was trying to keep him on the straight and narrow.

“You are lucky you have such a good young woman trying to look after you and you should be grateful for that,” said the Judge.

He fined Boyle €500 but added “If I had it my way, I would fine you €5,000 but I can’t.”
