Promotion /Relegation Play-Off

Kilmacrennan Celtic 2 Donegal Town Reserves 1

Kilmacrennan Celtic Reserves retained their Saturday Division One status when they defeated Donegal Town Reserves in this play-off match at Diamond Park, Ballyare. Playing with the aid of a strong breeze it was the Donegal men who took an early lead. Club captain John Paul Byrne got the goal. Kilmacrennan equalised on thirty minutes when Timmy Burke scored. Cathal Gallagher got the winner on sixty five minutes. Both sides will contest the same Divisions as they did in the 2012/’13 season.

An injury time equaliser from Darragh Gunnar Solskjaer broke Glenea United’s title dreams. The striker completed his hat-trick to level proceedings at 4-4 after an exhilarating affair at the Flagpole to deny Glenea a second consecutive title and hand the honours to Lifford Celtic who defeated Dunkineely Celtic 2-0 away to end a 40 year wait for glory.

The defending champions Glenea got off to a dream start when Kevin Barry found the target after just two minutes to signal their intentions for the afternoon. Patton equalised in the 10th minute with a superlative free kick from 20 yards out into the top corner. Barry put the visitors ahead for the second time on twelve minutes when the striker took advantage of a goalmouth scramble following an in swinging Barry Mc Ginley free kick from the left wing.

Cue the second half fireworks that ultimately would decide the destination of the title. Patton levelled proceedings to grab his second following a goal mouth scramble following on from a Paddy Sheridan free kick in the 50th minute. As tensions grew, Barry saw his strike from the edge of the area come crashing off the crossbar as Glenea pushed for that crucial lead that would put them in the driving seat. The Hoops talismanic centre-half Seany Barrett found himself inside the Glenea area following a corner kick which he duly drove home inside the area to give the Seasiders the lead on 60 minutes. The visitors pushed hard for an equaliser which they got

on 70 minutes when Padraig Mc Gee scored from the penalty spot.

The finale of finales unfolded as Glenea regained the lead. Michael Barry beat the Rathmullan off-side trap as he chased a long clearance. He got to the ball ahead of the outrushing Ian Strain. With the custodian committed Barry poked the ball into the unguarded net. The Hoops almost immediately pushed for an equaliser and with injury time almost up their star striker duly obliged with a typical goal scorer’s instinctive finish from inside the area following a corner kick. Four Four it ended, two hat-tricks, plenty of action, good attendance, this match had it all.

Dunkineely Celtic 0 Lifford Celtic 2

The was great tension in both camps as the final league game of the season unfolded at Darney Park. Both teams needed to win and hope results elsewhere went in their favour. Dunkineely playing with the strong breeze had the better of things in the opening half yet went in a goal down at half time. Playing some attractive football the home team created a number of chances but failed to convert them. Lifford took the lead on 37 minutes when a harmless looking cross from the right took a wicked bounce at the last moment and went past the keeper into the net. Despite this setback Dunkineely kept pressing and almost equalised when Shane Mc Whinnie’s shot, following a corner, was cleared off the line.

Lifford pressed in the second half for a second goal to seal victory but good defending by Dunkineely kept them at bay. The home side found chances hard to come by against a well organised visiting defence and the nearest they came to scoring was when Patrick White’s shot was turned around the post by Lee White. Lifford got their second on 85 minutes when Jude Patton scored from close range.

Both teams then had an anxious wait on results from elsewhere before the celebrations began for Lifford after a wait of 42 years. Dunkineely now face a playoff with Cranford on Sunday next in Ballyare to see which of them will be playing Premier Division football next season.

St. Catherines 2 Lagan Harps 1

St. Catherines played host to Lagan Harps on Sunday in Emerald Park. Both teams started the game very brightly and it was the Saints who took the lead on 19 minutes when Stephen Leslie swung the ball into the Lagan box and it was flicked on by Jason Noctor to Luke Kelly who put the ball into the Lagan net to put the Saints one up. On 30 minutes Daniel Breslin had a free kick from outside the box but it went over the bar. Then on 37 minutes Lagan had a good shot but it was well saved by the Saints keeper. Yet again Lagan had another headed chance but again it was well saved by the Saints keeper. Daniel Breslin had a shot that went just over the bar on 41 minutes. The 2nd half began with Lagan looking to get back on level terms and they started the sharper and they created a couple of chances but they came to nothing. On 55 minutes Lagan had another header that went just over the bar. Then in the 59th minute Lagan were given a free kick and it was put into the Saints box and it was headed into the Saints net to make the scoreline 1-1. Both teams pushed very hard to try and get the winning goal and on 81 minutes Daniel Breslin went down the line and put in a brilliant cross to the back post and there was Barry Cannon to head the ball into the Lagan net to make the score 2-1 to the Saints. In the final 9 minutes Lagan pushed the Saints hard to try and get level but the Saints defence held out and they went on to get the three points.

Kilmacrennan Celtic 3 Castlefin Celtic 1

Kilmac ended the season picking up 3 points by defeating Castlefin. In a game that was reversed to Castlefin, it was Kilmac who settled quickest. Kilmac almost opened the scoring on twenty minutes when Gavin Gorman crossed for the in-rushing Timmy Burke. The breakthrough came on the half hour when Ryan Shields crossed for Michael McLaughlin who scored from close range. Castlefin equalised when Liam McBride’s attempted clearance was mishit and somehow spun back into the net for the most freakish of goals.

The second half was a lacklustre affair, it took a penalty save from Kilmac’s McBride to spur Kilmac into life with twenty minutes remaining. Kilmac took the lead five minutes later when Burke put Eddie Doherty through on goal. Doherty flicked the ball over the head of the out rushing Castlefin keeper and coolly headed in from ten yards. Doherty was involved in Kilmac’s third and final goal ten minutes later. His pin point cross was met on the volley by his brother Johnny for a spectacular finish to the game.

Milford United 0 Gweedore Celtic 1

Milford lost to Gweedore in the final game of season. Milford dominated the first half with good chances through Cathal Mc Gettigan and Brendan Murray. Milford pushed for a goal but Gweedore defended great with Michael Mc Kelvey outstanding
