Councillor Dessie LarkinLETTERKENNY Mayor Dessie Larkin today called for a report on air pollution in the town to released publicly.

A report in the Irish Independent this morning showed air quality in the town is falling short of basic international standards.

But the Environmental Protection Agency has yet to give details to Letterkenny Town Council.

The town introduced a smoky coal ban on May 1.

Now, according to the report today, people in Letterkenny have been at a high risk of contracting serious respiratory illnesses.

“I welcome this new information,” Mayor Dessie Larkin told Donegal Daily.

“It would be good to see the report and have it published in full because people need to know if their health is at risk.

“The smoky coal ban will help to address this issue. I know from a report a few years ago there were problems in Main Street with traffic fumes, but we have never seen any sort of report in relation to smog from coal burning.”
