HUNDREDS of people from County Donegal are expected to attend Ireland’s biggest ever pyrotechnic and fireworks display in Derry this evening to mark the city’s year as City of Culture – and with some luck it might just stay dry for the occasion.
Events in Derry begin at 7.15pm with the display starting at 8.13pm (20:13).
Forecasters say it will cold and clear for much of tonight although some showers are expected across Donegal and Derry.
It will be cold with frost setting in too, especially in more sheltered regions, as temperatures dip back to between 1 and 4 degrees Celsius. Winds will be mostly moderate westerly.
New Year’s Day: It will be cool, bright and breezy. Overall the day will bring a lot of dry weather with good sunny spells, but there will also be some scattered showers. Cool, with highest afternoon temperatures of 6 to 9 degrees Celsius. Winds will be mostly fresh west to northwest.
REST OF THE WEEK: Any frost on Tuesday night will have disappeared by Wednesday morning as temperatures rise. Wednesday itself will be mainly dry and cloudy but occasional light rain or misty drizzle will affect Donegal during the day. And the weather in the county will be damp and misty for much of the time. But temperatures will be up around 11 or 12 degrees in southwesterly breezes. For the second half of the week daytime temperatures will remain relatively good with no frost at night, although values will drop slightly over next weekend. The weather will be mainly dry, except for occasional patches of mist and drizzle.
