Luke Dalton from Fahan, Co. Donegal has been selected to play for Ireland in the Rugby league Sudent World Cup 2013 which will be taking place in Leeds, England from the 1st – 14th of July.
He will be part of the 23 man travelling squad from which a 13 man team will be selected. Luke is a past pupil of Scoil Íosagain and Crana College in Buncrana and has just concluded three years of studying towards a BSc (Hons) Sports Studies degree at the University of Glamorgan, Wales.
Luke was directed towards the Ireland trials while playing for the University’s rugby league 1st team. Luke has also played for Donegal, City of Derry RFC and Inishowen RFC.
To be eligible to play for the Ireland student’s team you have to either be a student studying in Ireland or an Irish national studying in a foreign country.
As part of his preparations for the World Cup, Luke be attending various training dates and camps during the summer.
As Rugby league is not a tier 1 sport in Ireland, Luke will need to fundraise approximately €1,500 to finance the two week World Cup campaign.
Luke will be relying on the generosity of local businesses and the people of Inishowen to help him to get the Student Rugby League World Cup to represent Ireland.
Ireland have been drawn in Group 1 were they will face South Africa, England and Wales.
Group 2 contains New Zealand, France, Scotland and Australia.
