Bundoran’s best kept secret is a secret no longer as the town’s Waterworld centre was given the seal of approval by junior tourism Minister Michael Ring last night.
The Minister was in the county’s capital of fun to re-open the multi-million euro makeover of the complex.
And he declared: “This is an all-year-round facility for locals and tourists alike. And it’s great to be in Donegal on a sunny day to announce it.”
Chairman of Bundoran Waterworld Cllr Michael McMahon paid tribute to the contractors, architects and staff who had worked tirelessly across the winter months to ensure that the complex was ready for the 2013 season.
“An enormous amount of work has gone into this project – one of the only construction projects to be undertaken in the area in the past 6 months. We now have one of the top indoor water parks on the island with top class facilities to suit all ages from toddlers to adults – this includes 5 new family fun features,” he said.
Minister Ring, accompanied by the chairman of Bundoran Waterworld Cllr Michael McMahon and the chairman of Bundoran Town Council Philip McGlynn, cut the ribbon on the Galleon Ship, one of the five new features that the complex boasts now that renovations have been completed. It joins the gravity speed slide, 3 lane multi slide, aqua children’s slide and toddler pool, which in turn complement the existing wave pool, twister, tornado flume slide, speed rapids and more!
General Manager of Waterworld Bundoran Anderson Keys was keen to point out other improvements made to the facility including a brand new building management system, a biomass boiler, disability access system, emergency lighting, fire alarm and energy efficient fabrication on the entire shell of the building.
He said: “We hope these improvements add to everyone’s enjoyment of Waterworld. The new features widen the age range of guest that we can cater for so we look forward to a busy 2013 season’. He added ‘our annual charity day happens this Saturday 1st June where we donate a percentage of each entrance fee to charity. We’ve raised thousands of euro in the past for various charities and we hope that visitors to Waterworld will continue to support our efforts to give back’.
Head of Operations, North West, Martina Kerr Bromley, said “Failte Ireland were delighted to support the tourism development of Waterworld to the value of €236,000.
“Waterworld is a hugely important tourism business for Bundoran and the county and it offers a value, quality, excellent family activity. Tourism is a key industry in Bundoran and the town continues to welcome thousands of visitors each year – continued investment in tourism product is essential to attract visitors and drive economic benefit.
“We are delighted to have given this investment to Waterworld and that the project has come to fruition and we congratulate Anderson Keys and his team for all their hard work in having the improvements ready and open for 2013 season.”
