Finn Harps extracted revenge on Wexford Youths following last week’s league defeat by beating the southerners 2-1 in the FAI Cup at Finn Park tonight.
The game exploded into life in the second half after a somewhat incident-free opening period.
Harps grabbed the lead in the 55th minute through a rare Keith Cowan goal.
Some great work by Gary Merritt saw his cross find the central defender who headed home to make it 1-0.
Damian McNulty almost made it 2-0 with a super header ten minutes later but Wexford ‘keeper Graham Doyle pulled off a terrific save.
It was 2-0 with ten minutes to go when Harps were awarded a penalty after Brian Nolan took down Paul McVeigh inside the Wexford box.
Sean McCarron fired home the spot-kick and it appeared that Harps were home and dry.
But a super volley from Eric Molloy from a Dermot Carmody cross gave Harps a nervous last five minutes.
However, Peter Hutton’s side closed up shop and took an overall deserved victory.
