Today saw the running of the second Fintown 5k in conjunction with Féile na Finne.
One hundred runners and walkers faced the starters gun for the straight point to point 5k from Gairm Scoil Cú Uladh, Ballinamore to Halla Colmcille in the village.
The runners got something of a novelty compared to recent weekends, a dry day with blinks of warm sunshine as the pace hotted up along the lake. However, there was the runners real enemy; a stiff breeze in their faces all the way.
Local lad Dermot Brennan, running with Finn Valley, set the pace from the outset with close attention from Paul Toner and Raymond Birch of Letterkenny AC and Eamonn O’Donnell of Rosses AC.
By the time the lead group approached the three k marker two distinct duels were emerging between Brennan and Toner battling for the honours with Birch and O’Donnell having a ding dong for third.
A stiff climb between three and four saw the local lad Dermot Brennan open up a small gap on Paul Toner to clinch a win on the home sod with Raymond Birch taking third with a mere second in hand over Eamonn O’Donnell.
Noreen McGettigan, LAC had a comfortable win in the ladies with Marian Kerr LAC in second and local lady Margaret McGlynn in third place.
The evergreen Noreen Martin took the honours in the W50 category and similarly the evergreen Kevin Greenan took the honours in the M50 category both posting times that some of forties men and women would relish!
All in all a very enjoyable run out in Fintown with great prizes and the best of home baking to ease the pressure of the wearied muscles. Full results below.
