Lifford AC athlete Brendan O’Donnell won a bronze medal in the hammer at today’s All Ireland Schools Track and Field Championships in Tullamore.
Representing St Eunans College, Letterkenny, Brendan produced a fantastic performance as he launched the hammer to 40.08m to win his first All Ireland Schools medal and the first won by a club athlete in 23 years.
At this level, this was a major achievement for a most promising young athlete.
Karen Gallagher, representing Royal and Prior, Raphoe was very unfortunate to miss out on a medal in the 1500m Steeplechase also at todays’ Schools Finals.
In the last lap and with 150m to go, Karen was in third place and 15 metres clear of her nearest rival.
However, Karen hit the barrier at the water jump and crashed into the water. Karen bravely ran on to finish the race and was just pipped on the line finishing in 5th overall. A brave run for Karen, no doubt disappointed but valuable lessons learned for forthcoming Ulster and All Ireland T&F.
