RTE RADIO NA GAELTACHTA SENIOR CHAMPIONSHIP PREVIEW GROUP 3

It looks like a mismatch on paper, Gaoth Dobhair fresh from All Ireland Gaeltacht success play a Killybegs side that hasn’t won a league game all year and are propping up the Division One league table.  malinVGaothDobhair030509

Gaoth Dobhair have three county players at their disposal in the form off Odhran MacNiallais and the two McGee brothers not to mention two time All Star Kevin Cassidy in their ranks, it all points to a comfortable Gaoth Dobhair win.

However, as we are told every year form goes out the window come championship, while the league is important, the championship is the main prize on offer, all your eggs in the championship basket as Donegal manager Jim McGuiness phrased it a couple of weeks back.

Killybegs have a proud championship tradition it was only 3 years ago in 2010 they played in the Senior county championship final against Glenties.

They won’t lie down to Gaoth Dobhair and will put it up to the Maghergallon men who they hope will still be “leggy” from their weekend excursions in Waterford.

Killybegs can take hope from the fact that Bundoran were bottom of Division Two and without a manager just 7 days before they played high flying Division One outfit St.Michaels and earned a draw.

Come championship anything is possible.

Verdict – Draw

In the other game down for decision in Group 3 sees Termon welcome Dungloe to the Burn road in what should be another championship cracker.

Termon the current Intermediate champions are back in Senior championship action after a 12 month absence from the competition, where they will face a Dungloe side, semi-finalists in the championship last year struggling for consistency in Division Two. 120623_ft_sen_lg_term05

Termon will look to Ollie doherty and Paddy McDaid for inspiration, while Dungloe will be hoping the trio of Raymond Sweeney, Noel McBride and Adrain Hanlon can fire them to victory in the opening matches of Group 3.

Dungloe are without the services of the influential Cory Gallagher who is heading stateside for the summer, while that is a blow to Dungloe, with the Scally twins and the Redmond brothers as well as Shaun Sharkey and the outstanding Adrian Sweeney Dungloe will be confident of progressing.

Verdict – Dungloe
