IT’S another scorching day across County Donegal today with forecasters saying temperatures could hit 24C or 25C.
Peter O’Donnell from Irish Weather Online says it could even hit 26C in some inland areas later today – that’s warmer than some parts of Spain!
That’s up to 10C higher than parts of the south east of Ireland today.
The glorious weather is set to continue right through until Monday at least – although a low pressure system may bring rain on Monday night.
The dry weather has been so good, Donegal County Council is already restricting water supplies in some parts of the county.
The good weather has also given a boost to businesses.
Kelly’s Centra at Mountain Top in Letterkenny says ice cream sales – and sales of food for barbeques – have rocketed.
Businesses are reporting huge increases in trade across the county with hotels and B&Bs extremely happy with extra visitors this weekend.
“With weather like this there is no better place to be,” said a spokeswoman for the Mount Errigal Hotel. “Bookings are up with a large number of visitors from the North and Britain.”
Said Peter O’Donnell: “It’s going to be superb across Donegal today and it will be hot and sunny at the weekend as well, with temperatures on Saturday close to or above 24C. Sunday is also looking fine.”
But it will all end on Monday night, he said.
“Increasing cloud will lead to showers in western districts by about Monday night or Tuesday morning. This rain may spread all the way across the country eventually. You may hear that Tropical Storm Andrea is involved, but the system will have weakened almost to extinction by the time any remnants arrive in western Europe. By that time any rain will probably be rather welcome too, amounts at this point look like being moderate (5-15 mm,” he said.
So make the most of it.
