A Buncrana Town Councillor has said old people in the town are terrified after the latest burglary in the locality.
Cllr Ciaran McLaughlin was speaking of the burglary of 96 year old Greta Lilly at Aghilly on Saturday morning.
As well as being robbed, the frail pensioner was punched during her ordeal by the thugs who broke into her home.
Cllr McLaughlin, who lives directly across the road from Ms Lilly, said there was a huge sense of fear but also anger among locals.
“The people of Buncrana are rightly disgusted and angry about this attack. I know I shouldn’t say this but it will be lucky for these people if the Gardai get them first.
“To rob someone of 96 years of age is bad enough but to needlessly assault them as well is just unforgivable,” he said.
He added that there is now a sense that other elderly people living alone could be the next target of burglars.
He said he appreciated the Gardai were very pro-active with their investigation to catch Ms Lilly’s attackers but said it did not stop people fearing the worst.
“My own kids asked me if these people could come and break into our home – that’s the kind of fear that’s there.
“It’s a fear among the old and the young and it’s not right. The sooner the better these thugs are caught and locked up the better,” he added.
