RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta came to the rescue of Donegal and Laois football fans in Rory Gallagher’s bar in Lanzarote with their coverage of Round 4 in the qualifiers for the GAA Football All-Ireland Senior Championship on Saturday.
The pub was packed with Donegal and Laois fans anxious to watch the crunch match between the counties, however the game was not being televised, but up stepped Rory Gallagher, of Jimmy’s Winning Matches fame, to help out his customers from both Laois and Donegal.
Rory with the help of Donegal couple Mairéad O’Donnell and Daniel Cannon from Dún Lúiche in the Donegal Gaeltacht, translated the RnaG commentary by Séamus Mac Géidigh, and he kept the football fans from both counties happy as an impromptu commentator giving scores and updates throughout the match.
Jimmy’s winning matches then blasted out around the bar to the delight of the Donegal supporters as Donegal booked their place in the last 8 of the All-Ireland series.
Said Rory: “It was the most bizarre coverage of a match ever.
“It was great craic altogether so a big thanks to RnaG and to Mairead and Daniel.”
