AA RoadWatch has issued an urgent ice alert for Co Donegal’s roads after overnight temperatures fell to -4C.
Donegal County Council gritters worked again through the night on main routes around the county.
However most secondary roads – especially inland – are extremely dangerous.
Yesterday evening’s rain showers left many roads wet, and sub-zero temperatures have turned that rain to ice.
Roads around Letterkenny, Milford, Ballybofey, Convoy, Lifford, Moville, Clonmany and Buncrana are all extremely icy.
AA Ireland is urging all road users to slow down and drive with extreme care.
They are also warning that there is freezing fog in many areas.
Gardai have also urged caution to pedestrians as footpaths in many towns are also covered in ice.
This morning’s warning comes as forecasters continue to debate over whether a cold easterly weather system which will hit Britain will reach as far as Ireland.
Some forecasters believe we will get the extreme cold, and we may see some snow.
But others disagree.
