A new landmark highlighing the Penal Times in Letterkenny was unveiled last Wednesday evening by Bishop Boyce and Mayor Cllr Paschal Blake.
The monument was erected by the Letterkenny Comunity Heritage Group and sculpted by local man Redmond Herrity.
The stone used in the monument is the same as that used in the building of the Cathedral which is Mountcharles Stone.
The erection of the monument brings a physical presence to the story behind Sentry Hill where a Watchman kept an eye out for advancing British Red Coats while Mass was being said at nearby Rodgers Burn.
Following the lifting of the Penal Laws a Chapel was built in the vicinity of St.Eunans College.
Sentry Hill has a long historical connection with Letterkenny during the Great War anti-conscription rally’s were held there at the Cock-Pit. National Volunteers also drilled and trained there before the outbreak of the War of Independence.
Both Bishop Boyce and Mayor Blake acknowledged the work being done by L.C.H.G. mentioning the positive contribution that the monument would mean for local tourism in the town and how it links up St.Eunans College with the Cathedral Square.
