Speaking at the launch Minister McGinley said

“County Donegal is certainly playing its part for National Heritage Week.”

“This year there will be close to 100 ‘Heritage Week’ events taking place in County Donegal.”

“National Heritage Week provides the opportunity to raise awareness and appreciation of our heritage thereby encouraging its preservation for future generations.”

“Over €1 million was invested by The Heritage Council in heritage initiatives in County Donegal between 2006 and 2012 through its grants programmes and through the implementation of the County Donegal Heritage Plan in partnership with Donegal County Council and the County Donegal Heritage Forum.”

“The funding gave much-needed support and recognition to the wonderful efforts of heritage groups and enthusiastic people in County Donegal.”

“With over 250 local groups with a heritage remit alone in County Donegal, I am keenly aware of the need to support these local heritage initiatives.”

Concluding Minister McGinley referred to the County Heritage Plan as a very important way in which we can achieve the aim of the National Heritage Plan which is to ‘place heritage at the heart of public life’.

“I hope that everyone will play a part and make suggestions as regards what you’d like to see in it.”
