A Donegal radio reporter’s interview with a terrified pensioner during the Belfast riots has been played around the world.BELFAST RIOTS

Well-known BBC reporter Kevin Sharkey was at the scene when the elderly man tried to get through blockades to visit his sick wife in hospital.

The man pleaded to be allowed through to visit his wife, who has cancer, but he was jeered by the protesters and turned back.

“If you’re wife was dying what would you be doing. Take yourselves home and have a bit of respect for people,” the distressed pensioner pleaded.

The men could be heard mocking the pensioner singing “cheerio, cheerio, cheerio.”

BBC reporter Sharkey, a former Highland Radio reporter from Annagry in West Donegal, had his interview broadcast on BBC Radio Ulster.

He then tweeted the audio footage of the disgusting encounter.

And within minutes the piece was being retweeted around the globe.

Among those who was first to comment on the sickening encounter was Fianna Fail leader Micheal Martin.
