ENVIRONMENT campaigners in Greencastle and Moville have lost their legal challenge to sewage being pumped into Lough Foyle.
Mr Justice John Hedigan ruled in the High Court that local man Enda Craig had failed to produce any evidence to prevent Donegal County Council going ahead with its proposed treatment plant.
At times of flood, the proposed scheme would allow untreated sewage to come ashore.
Mr Craig and other residents – including John and Pat Hume – have long argued for a treatment scheme which would pump waste water outside the Foyle estuary.
It’s now thought the British government will move to prevent the scheme from going ahead.
Mr Craig can appeal to the Supreme Court after today’s hearing.
However the British – through the Crown Estate – claim ownership of all of Lough Foyle.
Sources there say they will not allow treated sewage to be pumped into the Foyle.
Mr Craig said they will now take the case to the European courts.
