Councillor Gerry McMonagle has said he condemns ‘in the strongest possible sense’ those responsible for the spate of recent burglaries which have struck the Manorcunningham area.
The Letterkenny based Councillor, who is also chair of the Donegal Joint Policing Committee, was reacting to confirmation from Gardaí that they are investigating an aggravated break-in which occurred at a property in the village yesterday afternoon – the second such incident to have taken place in recent days.
Cllr McMonagle said “I am extremely saddened by the confirmation which I have received this morning that Gardaí are carrying out an investigation in Manorcunningham following an aggravated burglary which took place at a property in the village yesterday (Wednesday) evening.
“It’s understood that the occupant of the house where yesterday’s incident occurred was threatened by two masked intruders before making off with a sum of cash.
“Regrettably, this is the second such burglary which has taken place in the Manorcunningham area this week after a similar break-in occurred at a house involving armed intruders and where again the occupants were threatened with violence and damaged was caused to the property.
“These are despicable acts and those responsible for carrying out these burglaries are wanton criminals who have no respect for our community, other people’s property, or the rule of law.
“These are the actions of mindless thugs and these attacks must be condemned in the strongest possible sense.”
He added his thoughts are with the homeowners and victims involved and said he hopes that life returns to normal for them soon after in what was a terrifying and traumatic experience.
He added “I would also appeal to anyone with information, no matter how seemingly insignificant, to report it to An Garda Síochána at Letterkenny Garda Station or the Garda Confidential Line.
“These types of crimes have no place in our community and those responsible for them must be brought to justice.”
