Winners of the recently held David Johnston sponsored Open competition at Letterkenny Golf Club.

This week saw the Mc Donald’s sponsored Open at Barnhill and with the ‘normal’ Irish summer weather returning.

There was more moderate scoring on the course and the competition was decided on BOT in favour of Laurence Duggan [21] who, with the help of a birdie at 11th and a back nine of 22pts returned an overall score of 42pts.

Relegated to second spot was Eddie Margey [14] also with a birdie at 13th but that blank at 6th saw him lose out on top spot.

In third place was Hugh Mc Clafferty [13] with 41pts and fourth place went to Gerard Boyce [14] on 40pts.

Cat.4 winner on the day was Clive Watson, a regular to the podium this season, while best gross was collected by Johnny Deeney.

Sat. 31st Open was sponsored by Eamonn Stevenson Financial Services and it took a three-way BOT to decide this competition in favour of Kevin Hannigan [10] who, with a terrific back nine of one over par gross 37 and 22pts, finished with 41pts to pip Patsy Hegarty [19] who recorded a disastrous triple-bogey at 15th.

Relegated to third in that BOT was Patrick Lynch [10] who, with birdies at 2nd and 3rd, made the turn with 25pts only to let slip on the inward nine with double bogeys at 15th and 17th.

Sunday 1st Sept. hosted a club confined competition and with such a large turnout as there has been on a Sunday in a long time, it was obvious that club members now have no more than a passing interest in the All- Ireland!

With glorious afternoon sunshine the scores were no doubt dictated by the blustery conditions and it was a very modest 37pts returned by Gary Loughran [20] who took first place, undoubtedly helped by birdies at 8th and 18th. Relegated to runner-up on BOT was Peter Muldoon [12] who, also having birdies at 16th and 18th, lost out on top spot with a double bogey in-between at 17th. Third place went to Seamus Mc Hugh [15] on 36pts.

Members are reminded that the club’s tickets for FREE membership are now on sale, all proceeds going to on-course development.

Tickets are available from committee members and pro-shop.

Team News:

Congratulations to the Charlie Coughlan led Letterkenny Golf Club Ulster Cup team who have won through to the GUI Ulster Cup final once again.

The Barnhill side, the present cup holders, took a 6 matches to 1 first leg lead to Scrabo on Sunday and gained the two matches required against the home side.

Club Captain, Henry Mc Cahey and all members of Letterkenny Golf Club would like to extend a fond farewell and best wishes for the future to club member Michael Costello.

Following his “short” sojourn at the club, Michael has returned to USA, although there is no confirmation that, having achieved his personal goal of reaching a low handicap figure, that he will be attempting to join the “challenge tour” in 2014. Michael was a very popular member at Barnhill and one who gave his time and effort voluntarily to the course re-development where and when possible. Good Luck Michael!
