There was heartbreak for Ireland and Donegal’s Seamus Coleman after they suffered a devastating defeat to Sweden in tonight’s World Cup Qualifier at the Aviva stadium.
The Ireland side went down 2-1 to the slick Swedes but it all could have been so different after Robbie Keane gave Ireland a dream start with a trademark clinical finish.
Coleman played the full 90 minutes and performed well but his opportunities to get forward were restricted due to the style of play the team has to adopt under manager Giovanni Trapattoni.
The result almost certainly means Ireland will not be playing at next summer’s World Cup in Rio they need to beat Austria on Tuesday and hope Sweden slip up.
Ireland have three qualifiers remaining, Austria on Tuesday then Germany away in October before finishing the series against Kazakhstan in Dublin.
