There was no joy for Ireland and Barry McNamee last night as Germany proved much too strong for the Ireland U21′s in a one sided UEFA U21 qualifier at the Showgrounds in Sligo.
Derry City star McNamee was a late call-up to the squad following the withdrawal due to the injury of Derrick Williams.
However he didn’t see any action as Ireland were completely outclassed by a German side packed with star studded quality.
Ireland got off to a terrible start when they conceded after just 12 minutes when Moritz Leitmer finished clinically giving goalkeeper Aaron McCarey no chance.
The game was effectively over as a contest when Kevin Volland netted a brace in three minutes to put Germany 3-0 up after just 25 minutes.
Ireland battled gamely for the duration of the match, but it didn’t help matters when Samir Carruthers was sent off for a second bookable offence.
Phillip Hofmann added another goal for Germany late on to add to Ireland’s woes.
