Former Republic of Ireland keeper Shay Given has said the time has now come for Giovanni Trapattoni to leave his post as manager of Ireland.
The Donegal stopper played under Trapattoni until he retired just after the European Championships in 2012.
The Lifford man who earned 125 caps as an Ireland players believes Trapattoni has done a good job but now feels the time is right for the experienced Italian to move on.
Given said, “Trapattoni has had a good reign as boss of Ireland, we narrowly missed out on qualification for the World Cup after losing a play-off to France.
“We then qualified for the Euros for the first time in 24 years and that was a fantastic achievement, obviously the campaign was very disappointing but it was great to get there.
“I do think the time is right after the Austria match for him to step down before his contract runs out in June, as I’ve said he’s done well but I think we need a change and we need something fresh.
Given also added that there was no tension between the Italian and the players but did say that communication was a problem at times.
“There was never any problem between the players and Trapattoni everyone got on well but because of his lack of English communication at times was a problem.
“People sometimes lose sight of the fact that we’re a small nation and were competed against Gaelic, Rugby and Hurling for players so it’s difficult to produce top quality players.
“I think the FAI should take there time with the next appointment and make sure it’s the right appointment for Ireland going forward.
