The FAI have officially announced that Giovanni Trapattoni and assistant manager Marco Tardelli has both parted company with the Football Association of Ireland by mutual consent. 
The pressure had been mounting on the Italian ever since Ireland’s disastrous campaign at the European championships in 2012.
A heavy home defeat by Germany last October coupled by defeats to Sweden and Austria last night have signalled the end of Ireland’s World Cup dreams and with it sealed the fate of the experienced Italian manager.
Bookmakers have made former Celtic manager and Northern Ireland international manager Martin O’Neill favourite to take over from Trapattoni.
