UNDER 16 COUNTY HURLING FINAL
Our U-16 Hurlers won the County Championship on Sunday in Burt with an impressive score line of Mac Cumhaills 4.15 – Carndonagh 1.2. Mac Cumhaills got the scoring underway after a nervous start with a succession of well worked goals and points from play through the early part of the first half.
Playing against a strong breeze in the first half, center forward Fintan Griffin swept back into the Mac Cumhaills half back line to help gain possession from puckouts.
The mid-field battle was won by Ma cCumhaills’ Carl Dunnion and Cody Wong, who came out on top against Carndonagh’s strongest line.
A number of early Carndonagh attacks were snuffed out by a determined Mac Cumhaills defence, which did not concede a score from play throughout the match.
Whenever Carn got possession of the sliotar inside the Mac Cumhaills half they were prevented from getting clean shots, as the Mac Cumhaills defence hunted in packs, refused to concede soft frees and pressurised the opposition into shooting wides.
Carndonagh’s half chances for goals were easily dealt with by goalkeeper Oisin Gallen, while the full back line marshalled their opposite numbers with ease.
A well struck Carndonagh free from the 21 yard line was blocked and cleared off the line by the excellent Carl Dunnion.
On the other side of the field, the Mac Cumhaills forwards had complete dominance, scoring wonderful points and expertly finished goals through the likes of Arron McAuley and Jamie Deward.
MacCumhaills exited the field for the halftime break well in front and in confidant mood.
The second half began much the same as the first, with Mac Cumhaills slow to gain the advantage.
Although the score line was very much skewed in MacCumhaills favour, Carndonagh were determined to make a match of it and must be commended for never conceding defeat.
An innocuous Carndonagh free was moved forward by the referee into a scorable position right in front of goals.
The free was struck low and hard into the Mac Cumhaills net by Carndonagh mid-fielder Jonathan Doherty. MacCumhaills responded immediately with a fine long range point by Arron Mac Auley from the resultant puckout.
MacCumhaills then put their foot back on the gas, dominating throughout the field and finishing scores with aplomb.
Mac Cumhaill’s mid-fielder Carl Dunnion was forced to retire after suffering a knock from a late pull.
In the closing ten minutes MacCumhaills had the luxury of being able to empty a formidable bench, which included Darius McAteer and Shea Logue.
A long range free scored by Arron MacAuley in the dying minutes of the match added a little icing to a well deserved MacCumhaills victory.
Much of the credit for this victory must go to manager Jamesie Donnelly and selector Eamon McAuley for instilling discipline and belief in this young team.
These players’ commitment, work ethic and skill is a credit to themselves, their families and the MacCumhaills Club. Congratulations to all involved. MacCumhaills Abu!
UNDER 12 HURLING LEAGUE FINAL
Our U-12 hurlers had an emphatic win in their League Final against Carndonagh in Mac Cumhaill Park last week. The Mac Cumhaills mid-field of Josh McGhee and Joel Bradley-Walsh dominated from the throw in.
With only minutes gone, Mac Cumhaills were 2 points up.This was quickly followed by points from Joel Bradley-Walsh, Dylan Crossan and Josh Mc Ghee and some excellent frees won and converted by Tommy-Lee Scully.
Carndonagh had been prevented from scoring in the first half by the excellent and tenacious defending of Shane Griffin, Mathew Doherty, Fiontan Doherty and Arron Gillooley and by a number of saves by goalkeeper and Captain Cian Gallen.
The home side entered the half-time break comfortably ahead.
Carndonagh started the second half a bit brighter, getting the first score of the half with a well taken free, which was followed up by a long range point from play. The resultant puck out was well won by Eoghan Gillespie, who rounded his man and soloed the sliotar 30 meters down field.
Although the sliotar was lost in the tackle, it was quickly recycled and converted into another Mac Cumhaills point.
The Mac Cumhaills boys were determined to see the contest out from this point, taking points from distance, seemingly at will and netting a further number of times.
Despite the ever increasing margin, great spirit was shown by the Carn players, who made it a contest till the very end.
A number of promising Carndonagh attacks were snuffed out by a teak-tough Mac Cumhaills defence, with aerial domination by Mathew and Shane, manly tackling by Arron and Fiontan and excellent saves by Cian.
Not satisfied with defending alone, the Mac Cumhaills defence was ever ready to join the attack, setting up many of the scores.
A string of fine points from play from Josh, Tommy-Lee and Dylan Crossan; endless work by the full-forward line of Dylan Kennedy and Nathan Scully was complimented by a display of goal scoring by Joel.
The excellent hurling skills of the home team, allied with their immense work rate and manly hurling meant that victory in this contest was never in doubt. Congratulations to this team of skilled and hard working boys.
THIRD TEAM.
The Thirds were out on Friday night against Glenswilly. This was a fine display by Mac Cumhaills and this was reflected in them recording a victory.
Sean Duffy scored 0-06. Paul Gallagher played a starring role in the win, setting up many scores from his unusual position of full forward.
He was unfortunate when he was taken down in the box and the resulting penalty thundered off the post.
The lads have a match against Ardara left, this could possibly be a curtain raiser for one of the Senior championship matches.
Will update info after soon as we receive it. Final score was Mac Cumhaills 2-10 Glenswilly 2-06
