Garda checkpointGARDAI have been hailed again today after police work uncovered a stash of stolen items.

Two men were arrested during the Garda operation at Portnason.

Garda bosses in Ballyshannon had ordered a series of stop-and-search checkpoints in the District over the past week.

As a result of this a large quantity of copper and along with a range of other items including batteries were discovered in the boot of a car.

Gardai arrested a 16-year-old boy and an 18-year-old man.

They were quizzed last night at Ballyshannon Garda Station.

A file on the thefts is being prepared by the DPP.

A senior Garda source told Donegal Daily: “This is a targeted and specific response to ongoing incidents of crime.

“The number of checkpoints has increased in recent days and a number of items have been seized.”

Gardai in the north and east of the county have now also carried out hundreds of stop and search operations in the past 10 days after a series of high-profile thefts.

The Donegal crimewave will be featured on Pat Kenny on RTE Radio1 at 10am.
