Dungloe Town have captured the Ulster title for the third year running after a fantastic victory against Monaghan United in a thrilling game at the Shorefront.
The game was played in near perfect conditions at The Shorefront and it was the home side Dungloe that began in whirlwind fashion and took an early lead through a Daniel Ward penalty early in the first half.
Dungloe maintained their high tempo game for a large part of the first half for a short and should have added to the scoreline with Mc Glynn and Proctor going close.
Midway through the first half however Monaghan Utd began to get a grip on the game and deservedly equalised through the very impressive McCabe.
This gave the visitors a massive boost and they began to dominate proceedings and subsequently took the lead on the stroke of half-time. went in front on the stoke of half-time following another fine goal by McCabe.
Dungloe Town came out at the second half a more determined outfit with PJ Doogan and Aaron Mc Glynn becoming more and more threatening.
Their pressure paid of when that man again Daniel Ward was left unmarked at the back post to equalised midway through the second half.
With the game ebbing & flowing one way then the other the game was really in the balance but Monaghan United again took the lead with a good breakaway goal and looked like they had done enough to capture the Ulster title.
The large home crowd were urging on the local lads but as the game ticked away it looked like Monaghan would progress to the knockout stages of the national cup.
However these Dungloe have a fantastic attitude and spirit and like all quality teams they keep going until the end and with less than a minute left on the clock Brian Proctor scored to send the match into extra time.
The Dungloe lads never looked back and went on to score two further goals and see out the match as deserved 5-3 winners.
Dungloe Town manager Pat Ward was delighted with his side’s victory but also with their application and attitude throughout the match.
“It’s a great credit to the character of the lads how they battled away in the second half creating chance after chance when it looked like it was going to be one of those days when the rub of the green would go the visitors way.
“This is the third year at successive ages that this team has qualified out of Ulster into the last 32 in the National Cup,which is a tremendous achievement and shows the continued commitment and dedication that these lads have.
“They are now looking forward to the draw for the next round of the national cup and they deserve to be in the hat.
“If this team plays to their potential we can beat anyone we have fantastic players all over the pitch and they never know when their beat.
“The management team and the lads would like to acknowledge the lift that the lads got from the large home support, they are now hoping for a home draw for the next round.
“Many thanks also to the parents for the fine spread they put on and also to Ionad Tempaill Chroine for use of the premises.
Good luck in the next round Dungloe Town and well done on another Ulster title.
