Former Donegal All-Star Kevin Cassidy has been appointed the new manager of the Gaoth Dobhair senior team following the club’s AGM on Saturday evening.
Cassidy enjoyed a fantastic Donegal career but it ended on a sour note for the former county wing-back when contributions he made to a book ‘This is Our Year’ penned by journalist Declan Bogue landed him in hot water with Donegal manager Jim McGuinness.
He was axed from the panel for the alleged breach of discipline and as a result missed out on Donegal’s All-Ireland winning campaign of 2012.
Cassidy played an integral role in helping Gaoth Dobhair capture their last senior championship in 2006 and he is now the man now responsible to get them challenging again for top honours.
They exited the championship this year following a limp performance in the quarter final against Ardara.
Cassidy still has plenty to offer the Gaoth Dobhair team so it seems his appointment will be on a player manager basis.
Speculation has linked his brother Stephen Cassidy and Brendan Devenney to roles as part of his backroom team for the 2014 campaign.
