A very poignant presentation was held on Sunday last at Letterkenny Golf Club on behalf of deceased member Al McKenna.

Al, a renowned local amateur artist, had painted a picture in oils of his long time playing partner Leonard Roarty approaching the 18th green at Barnhill.

And Al’s widow, Mrs. Ethna McKenna, decided that the most appropriate place for this iconic painting to be placed was in Letterkenny Golf Club.

With an audience of over eighty members and guests, Club Captain Henry Mc Cahey began proceedings by welcoming everyone to the prestigious occasion.

Having then had a personal memoir from ex-captain Niall O’ Donnell, who knew Al from a business prospective, it was time for club President Barry Ramsay, the presentation organizer, to explain the event on behalf of the club. Golf

“I am delighted to welcome here this evening Ethna McKenna, the widow of Al McKenna, his daughter Marie Therese and friends Carmel O’Reilly and Eileen Farrelly.

Al was a former financial controller of Donegal Creameries who passed away on Thursday 22nd December 2011.

As well as being a valued member of Letterkenny Golf Club, Al was also a well-known and formidable amateur artist who painted many of the iconic images of his adopted County of Donegal.

It has long been a deficiency of our club that while we have images of teams hanging on our walls we have no representations of the actual course but now, with Al’s family’s generous gift, this omission is now rectified.

In later years Al loved playing the top seven holes with his friend, Leonard Roarty.

The late Mr McKenna immortalised Leonard in his painting of the approach to the 18th green.

“Praise the Lord”! was his exclamation when he played a shot that pleased him.

I sincerely hope that he will be uttering that prayer when we finish this evening.”

Mr. Leonard Roarty then regaled the crowd with a few “golfing” reminisces of his and Al’s playing days together in which he stated that Al was not only one of the true gentlemen of sport but of life.

Mrs. Ethna Mc Kenna was then asked to make the presentation on behalf of her late husband.
