jack murrayInishowen Sinn Féin councillor Jack Murray has welcomed moves by Donegal County Council to address the ongoing odour problems arising from the treatment plant in the village of Burnfoot.

Residents in a nearby housing development had complained of a strong smell coming from the plant which, at times, had caused children to feel ill.

Cllr Murray said: “The problem arising from the plant in Burnfoot has become intolerable for nearby residents. As such, I moved an emergency motion in Donegal County Council asking for all possible solutions to be investigated.

“I have since become aware that a possible permanent solution has been identified and significant progress has been made.

“We have secured a number of package plants which are covered and do not release a smell. Such a plant can replace the current system in Burnfoot.

“Significant work will have to be carried out, such as planning applications etc, but I am confident that this problem can be alleviated by the summer.

“I want to particularly thank Pat Gillespie and his team for the work they have done as he left no stone unturned in searching for a solution to this problem.”
