PORTSALON NAMED AS ONE OF THE TOP GOLF COURSES IN IRELAND

Golf Digest have now published their updated Top 100 Irish Courses for 2013/14 season. We are proud to announce that Portsalon Golf Club has retained its position of 25th in Ireland and is rated in the top twenty Golf Links Courses in Ireland.

Due to the redevelopments we have consistently moved up the rankings over the past number of years.

The Captain Joe Harkin said it was indeed his privilege to be Captain of Portsalon Golf Club at this time to see the course retain its status in the top twenty-five courses in Ireland.

He stressed the ongoing works, the commitment and co-operation from the members will only see the course gain further places in the years to come.

He congratulated everyone involved especially our head green keeper and his staff for the excellent condition of the course and to Paul Mc Ginley and his staff on the improvements which he has recommended and have taken place to our course over the past few years.

With the current improvements at the first tee and some more to be carried out throughout the course, we may see Portsalon Golf Club rise further up the charts over the next few years year.

Portsalon golf course ‘’The Banks’’ was first established in 1891 and has been described by many as a sleeping beauty in the North West.

Portsalon Golf course is now recognised worldwide as a must play Irish links course. The scoring system employed by Golf Digest to assess golf clubs was as follows, degree of difficulty, shot making/variety, design variety, wow factor, memorability, condition and playability.

Christmas Hamper

On Sunday 15th December the members of Portsalon golf club will contest for the traditional Christmas hamper.

Members are asked to record their names on the time sheet.

This will enable the Competition Secretary conduct a draw for tees which will take place on Saturday 14th.

The competition will commence on Sunday with a shotgun start at 10.30 a.m. Please be early.

Festive Golf at Portsalon

With the Christmas season upon us Portsalon golf club has announced their golfing schedule for the holiday period.

There will be Ladies and Gents open competitions staged on 26th, 27th, 28th 30TH 31ST December and on the 1st and 4th January.

On Sunday 29th December and on 5TH January 2014 it’s the member’s competition.

Events

On Saturday 14th December there is an open gents competition and on Sunday 15th December a members Christmas hamper competition and on Wednesday 18th December it’s a gent’s open competition.

Good news for visitors to Portsalon Golf Club for the Wednesday open competitions with the visitor entry fee for the open competitions reduced to €15.

Christmas Gift Ideas.

The Portsalon shop is where both members and visitors can purchase many of their golf requirements not forgetting the Portsalon Continuing Story.

It may also be the place to purchase the perfect Christmas gift for your golfing partner. Gift vouchers for Portsalon Golf Club can also be purchased in the shop.

Results

The winner of the Wednesday open staged on 4th December was Sam Faulkner (10) 38 points, runner up Donal Callaghan (14) 36 points, gross Eamon Mc Conigley (6) 28 points, third Donal Callaghan (18) 35 points.

The CSS was 35 points. On Saturday 7th the winner of the open competition was Michael Gallagher (12) Letterkenny 39 points, runner up D P Logue (4) gross Pascal Cullen (5) , The CSS was 35 points.

On Sunday the winner of the members competition was Cathal Canning (8) 36 points, runner up Eamon Mc Dermott (5) 34 points, gross D P Logue (4) 30 points. The CSS was 34 points.

Winter Rules

Winter rules are now in place for in order to protect the surrounds of our greens during the Autumn and Winter months.

Please refer to the notice prior to teeing off.

Locker Rooms

It has come to the attention that a number of golfers are leaving their clubs and trollies in the locker room.

Members should note that the locker rooms do not provide a secure lock up facilities for clubs or trollies and these should be removed.

Placing

Members and visitors should note that 6 inch placing on fairways only has been introduced a bit earlier than usual in order to allow the green staff carry out repairs to some of the fairways.

Divot Bags

Members and visitors please note that divot bags are now available on entry to the first tee box and should you forget there is another chance to pick up a bag on the second tee box.

Please ensure that you pick up a bag and assist with the course maintenance
