Inishowen Engineering Reserve Premier Division Reports 27/01/2013

Glengad Res 1-3 Culdaff Res

Played in wet and windy conditions the home side with the advantage of the elements began well with Michael Gallagher firing narrowly wide from twelve yards. They were unlucky on 14 minutes when a Gary Kelly header from a corner was cleared off the line by Culdaffs Peter Doherty.Culdaff came more into the game as the half wore on with Conor O Brien racing onto a ball over the top only to see his attempted chip brilliantly saved by Michael McLaughlin. They took the lead before the interval when a William Hutchinson effort from the edge of the area was deflected past McLaughlin. Culdaff got a dream start to the second period when they increased their lead on 55 minutes after Barry Fitzpatrick cut inside two defenders before firing low to the bottom corner from twenty yards. The home side hit back within minutes and reduced the deficit when Daniel Mullarkey’s free found Seamus Doherty unmarked and he headed to the roof of the net.Glengad were on top at this stage and Michael Doherty headed just over before Kelly controlled a Stephen Doherty cross but fired straight at George Houten.Culdaff regained the initiative and on 83 minutes O Brien had a header well tipped over by McLaughlin.Minutes later Terence McLaughlin fed O Brien and he fired a superb twenty yards effort to the top corner to seal the points.

Aileach Res 1-2 Carn Res

Carn Reserves caused the biggest upset of the season when they travelled to Aileach and defeated the home side two weeks after suffering an eight two defeat at home. There was little in the game in the opening half an hour but the visitors then took the lead when Conor Doherty’s cross was headed home by the unmarked Brendan Tabb. Before the break the home side replied and Eddie McGrath found space in the area but fired straight at JJ Doherty in the Carn goal.Aileach had the frirst chance of the second half when McGrath ran clear of the visitors defence but with only Doherty to beat he fired wide.At the other end Conor Doherty was also just wide before a quick free by the visitors sent Niall McLaughlin clear to fire low past David McGeady from fifteen yards.Aileach got a consolation with five minutes to go when substitute Stephen Doherty fired a superb shot in off the underside of the bar from the edge of the area.

Clonmany Res 3-0 Sea Rovers

This match was switched to Saturday afternoon, and Clonmany dominated the first half. They took the lead on 11minutes when Kevin McCarron’s corner kick found Patrick Harkin at the back post.Patrick’s header crashed back of the crossbar and Clonmany right-back Dean Kelly was first to react, volleying the rebound to the net from six yards out, giving Sea Rover’s keeper Fergal Bradley no chance.Clonmany almost added a second on 13minutess when Kevin McCarron cut into the box from the left wing and drove in a powerful shot which came back of Bradley’s left hand post, with the ball coming out to Clonmany’s Aidan Doherty 12yards out,but Sea Rover’s Paddy Logue was able to block his shot.

Sea Rovers almost equalised on 16minutess when they launched a counter-attack and capitalising on a weak clearance Gerard Crossan broke clear. But Clonmany centre-half Martin Kelly made a superb last-ditch tackle to thwart him.Clonmany struck the woodwork for a third time on 18minutes when Jonathan McDaid’s dangerous cross from wide on the right flank came back off the crossbar, with Fergal Bradley scrambling, but the ball was cleared to safety.Clonmany finally got the second goal their play deserved when Alan Friel played a perfectly weighted pass through to find Patrick Harkin’s run and he slotted low past Fergal Bradley to find the bottom corner of the net.

The woodwork again denied Clonmany on 26minutess after Jonathan McDaid’s through ball found another Patrick Harkin run, but this time he was forced out wide by Fergal Bradley and his shot from a narrow angle came back of the angle of post and crossbar and was cleared to safety.Clonmany made it three nil on 40minutes when Brian Devlin’s cross from wide on the left found Aidan Doherty in front of goals and he slotted home.

The weather deteriorated during half-time and that and both teams making a string of substitutions were factors in making the second half less open with few real goalscoring opportunities. On 71minutess a cross from the right wing by Clonmany’s Kevin McCarron found Aidan Doherty just inside the area but his volley just cleared the bar.Clonmany’s last chance to add to the score came on 82minutess when a corner from the right was recycled at the back post and Brian Devlin tried a shot from just outside the area but it was always rising.Sea Rovers almost grabbed a consolation on 89minutes when Gerard Crossan’s shot from the right of the area seemed to be goalbound only for Clonmany keeper Roger McGilloway to pull off a fine save.
