Independent local election candidate Micheál Cholm Mac Giolla Easbuig today launched his first campaign newsletter with supporters at the Industrial Estate in Bunbeg.
Micheál told Donegal Daily, “Although the local elections are some months away, we have a real sense of urgency to get out there talking to people to convince them of the need for change.
“This week the Unite and Mandate trade unions issued a shocking report revealing that one in ten experience food poverty.
“These figures should shame our politicians, yet all we are hearing about is the ‘good news’ that we have ‘exited’ the bailout.
“Leaving aside the fact that we have not ‘exited’ the repayments and will not for decades, the extent of food poverty reveals the considerable human cost being paid.
“Donegal topped the list for food poverty as it does on practically every index of deprivation and want.
“Clearly our county has been poorly served by our public representatives who seem more adept at political gamesmanship and point-scoring than representing the interests of our people.
“This situation can only continue so long as local representation is dominated by the dead hand of party politics.
“We need public representatives who are able to speak their own minds rather than parrot a party line, who will do what is in the interests of the people rather than the interests of the party.
“That is why I am standing in the election as an independent, supported by a determined group of people who are sick and tired of political parties and their self-serving interests.
“I urge others who feel the same to come and join us by contacting our community office in Dungloe or ring 0858042050.
