Unprecedented demand at social welfare offices has prompted Intreo to postpone services to reduce footfall during the coronavirus crisis.

To protect staff and customers, all SAFE registration appointments have been postponed.

SAFE (Standard Authentication Framework Environment) registrations have been in high demand as customers apply for a Personal Public Services Number (PPSN) as well as a Public Services Card (PSC).

The application requires the authentication of a person’s identity which involves a face-to-face interview.

However, as of Friday, the online appointments service is being temporarily postponed on mywelfare.ie.

The Department of Employment Affairs and Social Protection is making arrangements to email each customer who has an appointment, to advise them their appointment has been postponed.

Minister Regina Doherty stated: “We are currently facing an unprecedented challenge with Coronavirus but my Department is determined to meet it with agility and flexibility to ensure we get assistance to all who need it. The measures we are taking today will re-enforce social distancing in line with HSE and WHO guidelines.”

The department has put arrangements in place to ensure that any person who requires a PPSN will be able to get one and details are available here.
